HOW TANGO THERAPY WORKS
Even if Tango Therapy seems like a leisure activity it is, at the same time, a group therapy with rules. For this reason it is important to understand that not all tango classes can be included as a therapy.
A Tango Therapy session needs to be led by a Teacher-Therapist with experience in understanding the body language, the communication and needs of the participants.
To know how to dance tango is not a condition for being accepted in the Tango Therapy session as the Tango lessons are a fundamental part of the therapy. A commitment of the participant to attend the sessions is very important.
Because Tango Therapy sessions work with each participant as they advance and also their troubles during the sessions the “Tango classes” cannot be open. It is possible to join the group during the first three classes (in a block of 10 classes) but not later in order not to disturb the development of the group.
It is necessary to have an interview with the group leader to decide upon the conditions and expectations of each person. Also, it is recommended to have one interview with the whole group. In certain situations it will be necessary to have a “taster” session in order to show the technique and to gauge how the group will respond to it.
Tango Therapy sessions are organized in modules of three or four sessions each. Each module with a specific goal. At the end of each module we will discuss with the group leader any improvements, modifications necessary and to decide upon the next steps.
Because the delivery method of the Tango Therapy session is different for each group we separate them into categories.
Tango Therapy sessions for people with:
Parkinson’s disease
Alzheimer’s (with exercises for depression and hipertension problems)
Sessions especially developed for couples where they not only learn how to dance tango, but also how to use the tango as a tool for understanding each other in order to improve their relationship.
